Why women like flowers

I was thinking about this yesterday – probably because when I was out shopping with my mom I kept seeing flower stands. There is something oddly traditional about a man giving a woman flowers. Being a history geek, I’d love to be able to unravel the history of flower giving, but I’m sure it amounts to the fact that one could go and pick them to create their own arrangements. Modern florists are an extension of that, as they’ll be able to add some style and flair to the bouquet.

Bouquet of Gerbera Daisies

I’ve never had a guy give me flowers. Hell when I went to my high school prom I didn’t even have a date, so my parents bought me a wrist corsage. You’d think that since I’ve been in a fair number of theatrical productions I would’ve gotten friends on a number of occasions. However, the actual number is 2. The last high school show I ever did, my parents got me a bouquet. Then the show I was in while living overseas, a friend of mine got me a single rose for opening night because she knew I’d been having a hard time not having friends and family from home there for the show.

So for me I guess I like the idea of a guy buying me flowers because it’s something I’ve never had and I find it terribly romantic. I also love flowers, but it’s not something I would ever buy myself because that just seems silly in my mind – probably partly because I view it as a waste of money I should be saving. When someone gives me something, I want it to be something I wouldn’t buy myself and flowers definitely fall into that category. I love flowers – something a lot of my friends are surprised to hear, which I imagine has something to do with my tomboyish exterior. Spring happens to be my favourite season though because of the burst of colour that arrives with it. I love fresh flowers and I wish I was more into gardening because I’d love to have my own oasis of colour in the backyard.

So guys – most women like flowers, even the ones who you might think wouldn’t. It shows you thought of them. Tips though – don’t just buy something at the grocery check-out. Also don’t just buy cheap carnations. I don’t know anyone who actually really likes carnations anyway. Don’t go overboard – especially if you haven’t been dating long. Get to know your girl – she might be like me and love a single gerbera daisy with a card tied to it.

i will never buy flowers for a woman again unless it’s to get in her pants or it’s valentines day. the last one has null and voided buying flowers years round because of love. they expect after then use it against you to start a fight when they start thinking they DESERVE them. men, take my advise and keep it for what’s said above.
